About Prof. Abel Méndez
Professor Abel Méndez is a planetary astrobiologist and Director of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. His research focuses on the habitability of Earth, the Solar System, and extrasolar planets. Prof. Méndez is a NASA MIRS Fellow and has also conducted research at Fermilab, NASA Goddard, NASA Ames, and the Arecibo Observatory.
Prof. Méndez developed the Earth Similarity Index and the Visible Paleo-Earth Project and maintains the Habitable Worlds Catalog, a database of potentially habitable planets. His current work includes theoretical modeling of planetary habitat suitability, the characterization and detection of potentially habitable exoplanets, and the search for extraterrestrial life.
His work has been featured in many publications, including New Scientists, American Scientist, Scientific American, National Geographic, and Nature. Prof. Méndez is also active on X, Mastodon, BlueSky, and Threads, where he shares updates on astrobiology.

El Profesor Abel Méndez es un astrobiólogo planetario y Director del Laboratorio de Habitabilidad Planetaria en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Arecibo. Su investigación se centra en la habitabilidad de la Tierra, el Sistema Solar y los exoplanetas. El Prof. Méndez es un Becario MIRS de la NASA y también ha realizado investigaciones en Fermilab, NASA Goddard, NASA Ames y el Observatorio de Arecibo.
El Prof. Méndez desarrolló el Índice de Similitud con la Tierra y el Proyecto Paleo-Tierra Visible, y mantiene el Catálogo de Mundos Habitables, una base de datos de planetas potencialmente habitables. Su trabajo actual incluye la modelización teórica de la calidad de hábitats planetarios, la caracterización y detección de exoplanetas potencialmente habitables, y la búsqueda de vida extraterrestre.
